Looking back at your preliminary task (the college magazine task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

I already knew how to use Photoshop before the tasks started so my knowledge and skill in using Photoshop hasn’t developed much.
What I did learn while doing the tasks was how to feather the edges of images, I did this by clicking on the image and clicking feather from the options, the altering the options and levels. This made the edges of the photos look a lot smoother.  I had to pay attention to detail so that the magazine looked professional and didn’t had bits of the background in the image
I also leant how to get lines to divide up the page into different sections. I did this by clicking and dragging the lines out from the rulers at the sides of the page. This made it easy to segment the different parts of the page.
While making the magazine pages I also use the quick selection tool.  I used this by clicking the quick selection button and dragging the tool over the part of the image I wanted to delete. This allowed me to easily remove the backgrounds from my images.
I also used text boxes while making the pages. I done this by clicking the text button and then dragged out a box on the page. This allowed me to easily move and alter text on the pages.
All the tools used together help to create a good audience appeal, the layouts used in my magazine pages are based on layouts from other successful magazines. And fonts used are different depending in the places where text is used, for example the font of the masthead is big and striking while the text used in the article is small and uniform.
I had to research magazines for this project, so I could find out how other magazines set out there pages with there pictures and text.
I had to seek feedback and share creative ideas with other people so that I could improve on my magazine and make it better.
For the task I had to write an article, it had to be long enough so that it would fill the columns and not leave many gaps. It also had to have good grammar and punctuation and was proof read to make sure that there were not any mistakes in it before it was put in the article.

Comparison
The contents page of the preliminary magazine it not as good as the final magazine. This is because the font used is an old style and now very modern so i don’t really fit with the theme of a modern college magazine, unlike the final music magazine which uses a more up to date font and looks more modern. The preliminary mag also doesn’t really support a house style, as there are completely different colours used and the only thing linking them is the name of the magazine at the top. The final magazine pages do have house style as there is the came back ground colours used and the same masthead is used on both of them.
The front cover of the preliminary task is also not as good as the final magazine front cover. This is because the images used on the preliminary are plain nd boring and the background has not been removed. On the final front cover the image looks a lot better, as there people in it are doing more than just smiling, and the original background has been removed from the image and replaced with a better blue back ground that makes them stand out from the page. There is also more graphics used on the final front cover this is an improvement to the preliminary as the page has less empty space and the graphics look a lot better than just using text on the page. The masthead is also better on the final front cover this is because the final masthead has a more interesting font, its letter are bigger, and there is more effects used on it, in comparison the preliminary  masthead is plain and boring, very basic in comparison to the final one.

  1. You need to post your prelim tasks and your finished music mag ones here as small images and discuss some of the wqays in which the music magazines show development from the college magazines. Also you need to think about if your research and planning skills and methods developed from one to the other.
