A Convention is a standard that everyone seems to follow, such as a masthead being at the top of the tape, of the main image covering all of the background on the front page.
The genre of my magazine that I produced was punk, I got influence from music magazines such as Kerrang for the double page spread,, and rock sound for the front cover.
The Mise-en-scene of the images used in the magazine are very simple, they just have a male and two females people standing together against a blank back ground in a Variety of poses, and also there is 2 photos of a male and a different female doing the same thing. This is very conventional as photos in magazines are always set up and have people posing in them.
Costumes and props (explain choice of...) There is no props used and the people are just wearing everyday colours so this is very unconventional to other magazines as they uses more props and editing and trend to have a lot more going on in the image. Such as having them in an interesting location of doing something in the image.
The images used in the magazine pages are used to get the reader’s attention and to draw them to a certain page or article, the people used in the images trend to fit the genre of the magazine, for example my magazine has a punk theme so there is a punk band on the front cover, who are the stereotyped look and attitude.
The masthead has a very unusual font, which fits with the alternative theme of the magazine; the colours used in the font are very bright and eye catching which also shows it to not me conforming to other magazines. The placement of the masthead the top and centre of the page does conform to conventions as its where other magazines put there mastheads, and it also makes it eye-catching to the reader.
The written content for the magazine is kept very informal and short in the front cover and contents page. On the double page spread however the text is a lot longer as there is an article and interview so there’s a lot more information to cover . I chose the keep the writing informal as its not a very serious magazine , and kept the text minimal on the contents and front cover to make it simpler to read.
The magazine suggests that it is about the punk genre, as it has things like a unusual font and images of people who fit the genre, and the magazine has info about punks band etc.
The contents page just gives some information about what’s in the magazine in a list with page number, it is laid out so all the writing is on the left and so there is a big picture on the right. The text on the page has a number of colours to make different parts stand out more and also there are lines which help to separate bit as well. At the top of the page there is the masthead from the front cover which keep the name of the magazine visible when it is opened.
The double page spread has a full page picture on the left along with the name of the band above. The main body of text is on the right page there is two columns of text with gutters either side of them and a pull quote in the middle. At the top of the page is a kicker which starts off the article. At the bottom of the page there is a separate section with picture in which has pictures and captions in it. The pages have all the conventional parts of the magazine article but with a different layout.

Kicker: A kicker is a short couple of sentences at the start that are supposed to draw in the reader and make them want to read the rest of the article. The sentences are often use a bigger size font to the rest of the text in the article, and the text is made bold. This is to make it stand out more and draw the reader’s eye to it with the hope that they read it.
Pull quotes: Pull quotes are short phrases from the article that have been pulled from the rest of the text and enlarged. The purposed is to show the reader some of the bits from the article like a quote or a statement, that the reader my find interesting and make them when to read the article
Columns and Gutters: Double page spreads are laid out in rows of columns with gaps in between each column. The writhing in the double page spread is laid out like this to make is simple to read. This helps the reader to read the article as the columns of text are easy to follow, and the gutters between them make finding different parts of the article easier.
Sidebar: A side bar is a section of the double page spread that is separate from the main article, but talks about a related subject. The reason for a side bar is to give something extra to the topic of the double page spread but be about something different to the article.
The house style of the magazine uses a blue background and blocks of colour, which along with and basic font creates a house style. The style uses informal text ,and uses colour and images a lot to convey an alternative type of magazine .
You need to explain more about the DPS conventions Joe. What is the point of a pull quote, for example? Also, you need to add some more screen shots if you can.
